A Look Back at Willie Nelson’s “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain”

Even by the measures of sad country songs, “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain” is certainly one sorrowful track. The singer kisses his love farewell, realizing that he’ll never once see her again. As he sings it, he’s at that moment an old man who never found the love of his life again, and looks forward to being with her in heaven.

Performing the song every night had taken a sentimental toll on Nelson, who became an infamous drinker back in the ’70s. He shared with Hot Press interview: “It’s really difficult to sing ‘Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain’ or ‘Always On My Mind’ without getting emotionally involved, especially when the audience gets emotionally involved and you feel their feelings. You can only wallow in your own misery for so long without saying, ‘Wait a minute, I want a drink!’”

In the twilight glow I see her
Blue eyes crying in the rain
When we kissed goodbye and parted
I knew we’d never meet again
Love is like a dying ember
And only memories remain
And through the ages I’ll remember
Blue eyes crying in the rain
Some day when we meet up yonder
We’ll stroll hand in hand again
In a land that knows no parting
Blue eyes crying in the rain
