Chris Stapleton only recently made his big break into the spotlight, but the “Traveller” musician has a voice straight from the classic country era.

Stapleton, who has been an established composer in Nashville for several years already, has written some of country’s greatest hits in recent times, such as “Never Wanted Nothing More” by Kenny Chesney, and “Comeback Song” by Darius Rucker.

After his performance with Justin Timberlake during the 49th annual CMA Awards in November 2015, Stapleton suddenly emerged as one of the greatest names in the country music industry. All of that attention earned him a spot to play at the famous music festival Coachella, and he even got a chance to perform on Saturday Night Live.

The sole reason Stapleton became so popular is because of his truly amazing voice. It’s a voice that reminds us of the classic country era musicians, like Waylon Jennings.

During his performance in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 7, 2016, Stapleton honored Jennings by performing his number one hit song, “I Ain’t Living Long Like This.”

“I Ain’t Living Long Like This” was composed by singer/songwriter Randy Crowell, and was originally recorded by him for his album of the same title. It was then recorded by Emmylou Harris in 1978 for her album, Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town. Jennings recorded his own rendition of the song a year later, releasing it as a single from his album What Goes Around Comes Around.

The song reached the number one spot on both the US and Canadian charts, making it Jennings’ 11th chart-topping hit. Even today, the song is still incredibly popular, and was even featured as a track on the “Rebel Radio” station in the popular video game Grand Theft Auto V. With his classic country sound, Stapleton is the ideal modern artist to play Jennings’ hit song. You can listen to his remarkable version in the video below.

What other classic country song do you think Stapleton should cover next?

LYRICS

I look for trouble and I found it son
Straight down the barrel of a lawman’s gun
I tried to run but I don’t think I can
You make one move and you’re a dead man friend
Ain’t living long like this
Can’t live at all like this, can I baby?

He slipped the handcuffs on behind my back
And left me reeling on a steel reel rack
They got’em all in the jailhouse baby
Ain’t living long like this
Can’t live at all like this, can I baby?

Grew up in Houston off the wayside drives
Son of a carhop and some all night dives
Dad drove a stock car to an early death
All I remember was a drunk man’s breath
Ain’t living long like this
Can’t live at all like this, can I baby?

You know the story how the wheel goes ’round
Don’t let them take you to the man down town
Can’t sleep at all in a jailhouse baby
Ain’t living long like this
Can’t live at all like this, can I baby?

I live with Angel she’s a roadhouse queen
Makes Texas Ruby look like Sandra Dee
I want to love her but I don’t know how
I’m at the bottom in the jailhouse now
Ain’t living long like this
Can’t live at all like this, can I baby?

You know the story about the jailhouse rock
Don’t want to do it but just don’t get caught
They got’em all in the jailhouse baby
Ain’t living long like this
Can’t live at all like this, can I baby?
