One thing in this big wide world is for sure – musical talent runs deep in the Twitty family’s blood. Conway Twitty was one of the most legendary country musicians of all time, creating numerous hit albums and singles that are still enjoyed today. His early passing at the age of 59 in 1993 extinguished one of the industry’s brightest stars.
However, Conway’s musical legacy lives on in more than just his singles and albums – it is kept alive by the talent and voices of his very own family. His son, Michael, frequently sings his father’s songs along with his own, and Michael’s son, Conway’s grandson, also contributes to the Conway music legacy.
His name is Tre, and during a performance in 2015, he made the decision to perform a song from another country legend – Waylon Jennings. Like Conway, Waylon Jennings was a country star whom we had lost too soon. After a flourishing career that saw him become one of the leaders of the outlaw country subgenre, Waylon died at the age of 64 in 2003.
One of Waylon’s most well-known songs itself pays tribute to another country legend, Hank Williams. Called “Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way,” the song recognizes Hank’s impact on country music, and questions the current state of the industry. The song had become a #1 hit right after its release, and up to this date it is still a favorite among country fans. This is the song that Tre chose to perform.
Of course, Tre gave the song some Twitty flair, and even though he doesn’t sound very much like his grandfather, you can easily hear hints of Conway in his voice. He brought a performance that was country to its heart, and the crowd recognized him with a warm round of applause that will make any star proud.
Regardless of what he sings, Tre honors his grandfather’s astounding legacy in just about every performance. There’s no doubt about it – both Conway and Waylon would have loved Tre’s performance of “Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way.”
