Cody Jinks just revealed his cover of Merle Haggard’s “The Way I Am.” Jinks recorded the song for his new Aug. 12 album, I’m Not The Devil.
The tune is a great complement for Jinks. His sleek vocals slide without difficulty throughout the classic track, reaching all the right notes. The Haggard effect undoubtedly stands out throughout the song. However, there’s no mistaking Jinks’ cover for anything but upholding to the original.
Every little thing about the tune says classic country. Out of the lead, the guitar slides to the chord progression and chorus harmonies. Certainly, The Hag would agree that this is a great cover.
Sonny Throckmorton composed the tune, and Merle Haggard fell in love with it. So he released it as the lead single to a 1980 album of the same name.
“The Way I Am” takes up an appropriate place on Jinks’s upcoming record. His career is about to take off and stay at the top. After 2015’s Adobe Sessions, he’s captured the country music world’s interest for now. There’s a clear importance in adding a song called “The Way I Am” to an album known as I’m Not The Devil.
Cody Jinks considers darker and deeper depths in the coming album. He spends a lot of time sharing to the crowd that he may not be whatever they think he is. However, with this Haggard track, he gets to pay tribute to a hero and let them know what he is at the same time.
