Merle Haggard’s version of Hank William’s “I Saw The Light” was introduced on his The Land Of Many Churches album in 1971. The track had been performed together with The Strangers and The Carter Family, and what a track it was!

“I Saw The Light” had been composed by the iconic Hank Williams and unveiled in 1948. This track conveys the story of a man wandering through life haphazardly as a sinner, before the he allows Jesus in, saving him. It’s really a widely known fact that Williams experienced some trouble with alcohol, and this song had an intense significance to him.

While no one can possibly perform this like Hank, Haggard’s version is outstanding. Take a look!

LYRICS

I wandered so aimless life filed with sin
I wouldn’t let my dear savior in
Then Jesus came like a stranger in the night
Praise the lord I saw the light.

I saw the light I saw the light
No more darkness no more night
Now I’m so happy no sorrow in sight
Praise the lord I saw the light.

Just like a blind man I wandered along
Worries and fears I claimed for my own
Then like the blind man that god gave back his sight
Praise the lord I saw the light.

I saw the light I saw the light
No more darkness no more night
Now I’m so happy no sorrow in sight
Praise the lord I saw the light.

I was a fool to wander and astray
Straight is the gate and narrow the way
Now I have traded the wrong for the right
Praise the lord I saw the light.

I saw the light I saw the light
No more darkness no more night
Now I’m so happy no sorrow in sight
Praise the lord I saw the light.
